Welcome Students! with some FAQs

Our first class for 2013-2014 was on Sunday September 22.  We had some new students and a number of returning students. Next week family handbooks will be distributed.  Thank you to all who paid the fees in full. Reminders will go out to those who have not, or who need to register or provide baptismal certificates.

The first mass we expect to take the children to will be on October 6.

I had a conversation yesterday with a prospective student.  Let me summarize it.

  • Classes have already started. Is it too late to join?
    • No, we have students who join us all year.  However, entering a class late might affect when a student has his or her First Communion or Confirmation.
  • How much does it cost?
    • The fee this year is $60.  No one will be turned away due to inability to pay. Speak with the coordinator if you have an issues.
  • What do I need to bring to the first class?
    • We need the baptismal certificate in a timely way, but it does not need to be brought before the child attends class.
  • What if my child cannot read  or has a learning or behavioral issue?
    • Most young children cannot read, so the classes aimed at younger children do not emphasize reading.
    • If your child has a learning challenge, please let us know.
    • Behavioral issues will be dealt with in class, but we would appreciate knowing what strategies you find helpful in other situations.
    • Please do everything you can to help your child succeed. If he or she usually takes medication in school, the medication should be taken before religious education classes. This applies to other strategies for success: having  breakfast, being on time, practicing work between classes.
  • Should I stay during the class or should I plan to be somewhere else?
    • Some parents stay, and some parents do not.  We ask that you make sure that the child is picked up at 11:15, because another group sometimes uses the space at 11:30.
  • How long is the program?
    • Sunday classes run from 9:30 to 11:15 during the school year, September to June.
    • First Communion usually takes place after two years of classes, and Confirmation after three years.
  • What if my child is older than second grade but has not made First Communion?
    • The student will be placed in an age-appropriate class. Occasionally the student may join the First Communion class (for example, for practice for First Reconciliation) instead of his or her regular class.
    • Supplemental classes or work may be scheduled to ensure the child is on track.
